Recent figures from the Graduate Careers Council of Australia show graduate employment has reached its highest level in a decade.

According to the Weekend Australian (May 11-12, 2002), the strong growth in the social welfare area over the last five years is a trend that will continue. There are great opportunities in community work, welfare, counselling and psychology.

It is also anticipated there will be further growth in human resources, law and accountancy.

The Department of Employment and Workplace Relations website indicates there are national skill shortages in health care (ie nursing, pharmacy, occupational therapy and radiography), high school teaching (particularly in the areas of physics, maths and IT), and accountancy.

The other good news to consider when putting together your job applications and resumes, is that employers are not just after academic skills, they are looking for qualities such as teamwork, communication skills, problem solving ability and commitment.

Good luck with your job search!
