Learning and the Workplace - Information For Students

Learning and the Workplace is a unique course designed to help students document the full extent of their skills in preparation for graduate job seeking and employment. It is offered in the Faculty of Arts but is available as an elective to students in any faculty.

If you are a student, chances are that that you have a part-time job. Have you ever thought about how you use your university acquired capacities in the workplace or vice versa? This course will help you to realise ways in which you do that. You will identify:

  • The full range of your skills
  • Ways in which you transfer your skills among different contexts
  • The origins, applications and usefulness of your skills (both discipline specific and generic)
  • How engagement in this reflective process will aid in the preparation for and success in, full-time job seeking after graduation.

The course is particularly valuable for you if you have not had the opportunity to do an extended work placement as a formal part of your degree. You have the opportunity to do some important thinking and preparation (including attendance at student services workshops and a preliminary CV) for the daunting task of graduate job seeking. THE BEST PART IS THAT YOU ARE AWARDED ACADEMIC CREDIT FOR IT!

The course consists of four face-to-face tutorials, three written assignments, a peer interview and attendance at a series of Student Services workshops.

Past students have had many positive things to say about the course:

'The course has boosted my confidence and the way that I see myself. I realise I had many more skills than I had given myself credit for.'

'I realised that uni wasn't just about acquiring knowledge but about developing skills and abilities that I will benefit from for the rest of my life.'
